The Dilemma - Overview

A prisoner's dilemma is a situation where individual decision-makers always have an incentive to act in a way that creates a less than optimal outcome for the collective group of individuals.

Read a detailed writeup of the Prisoner's Dilemma here.

Choice A: Snitch on the Other Prisoner

You take the opportunity to talk and snitch on the other member.

If they also snitched on you: You both lose -150.
If they kept silent: You gain +250 and they lose -250.

Choice B: Remain Silent

You refuse to talk and remain silent.

If they snitched on you: You lose -250 and they gain +250.
If they also kept silent: You both gain the minimal +75.

Payout & Outcomes

Everyone starts with 1,500 points at the beginning of every week. Playing the game results in the following payouts.

Optimum Strategy to Win

The best outcome for you individually is to win +250... but you only have the chance for that if you talk.

And... there is no definite optimum strategy for the greatest reward. It's up to you how you want to play and likewise it's up to your fellow inmate how they want to play.

Inspired by St. Judes

Prisoner's Dilemma Club is proud to be committed to using our platform to support Childhood Cancer Research.

  • We donate 10% of the gross project distribution to St. Jude

  • St. Jude Children's Research Hospital relies on individual contributions to fund the majority of treatments

  • Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push childhood cancer survival rates from 20% to 80% in the U.S.
